GRAB a pair of skates as a popular ice rink in Southampton has now opened.

Dozens of residents flocked to the city centre yesterday to have a go at ice skating as the ice rink outside Westquay opened.

As previously reported, the ice-cool attraction was expected to open on Saturday November 10.

But on Saturday morning Westquay announced that the attraction was going to remain closed due to “exceptionally mild weather”.

Following heavy rain the ice melted and residents who had pre-booked tickets were given the opportunity to book a new date or get a refund.

But now, the ice rink in the new plaza to next to medieval towers and walls, is open and promises to be bigger and better than last year with improvements made on and off the rink.

This year’s attraction will have bigger skate exchanges, new skate aids, a larger outdoor space and improved session times.

The Alpine-style bar Moguls, which serves alcoholic drinks and hot beverages, will have a new outdoor space and VIP areas available for hire.

Another change is the introduction of an ice-resurfacing machine known as a “Zamboni” machine, which will help keep the ice rink smoother, allowing for better skating.

Cllr Satvir Kaur, cabinet member for homes and culture, said: “It is really fantastic that the ice rink is back. It is part of a variety of activities and what’s on offer in the city as a whole. Our city is fast becoming the number one place for people and families to enjoy the festive season. I hope visitors and Southampton residents will enjoy everything that is on offer.”

The venue attracted 30,000 skaters between November and January last year, and this year it looks to attract even more.

It will be open until January 6 while the Christmas lights switch on in Southampton will be on November 15.
