CINEPHILES are gearing up for the 11th annual Southampton Film Week. This year's film festival - organised by Southampton charity City Eye - is set to offer another excting set of events highlighting homegrown talent as well as some cult classic films.

Festival Director, Susan Beckett said: “As City Eye continues with its plans to establish a new film and digital hub for the region at Studio 144 in Guildhall Square, it is fantastic to showcase the achievements of the City’s home-grown talent.”

Here are the highlights:

November 9

Young adults supported by The Prince’s Trust will launch this year’s SFW with two short films they have produced which address issues of mental health.

Followed by short films of some of Shakespeare’s great monologues filmed in contemporary urban settings – a project created by "new talent" from NST Laboratory Ollie Bruce

November 10

The region's best short films from the SFW Shorts 2018 competition will be screened - with the winner receiving the Michael Fuller Award for Best Film and the Best Regional Filmmaker winner also announced.

Audience members will also have the opportunity to vote for their own favourite on the night

Tango Your Life

Tracie's Latin Club is celebrating 18 years of TLC Tango in Southampton, and as part of Southampton's Film Week, will be screening this fabulous documentary about Tango life in Buenos Aires​.

The Screening Sex Project presents:

The Rape of Recy Taylor

Described as one of the most vital documentaries of recent times, Nancy Buirski’s The Rape of Recy Taylor examines the largely unpunished sexual violence against women of colour in 1940s America. The screening will be preceded by an introduction from the film’s distributor Johanna von Fischer in conversation with Solent University’s Head of Film, Darren Kerr.

Short Story Cinema

Sun Ra's Space is the Place

Hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as influencing Solange, Sonic Youth and Lady Gaga, this musically astral psychedelic vision from Sun Ra is a genre bending piece of science-fiction from the Afrofuturist pioneer. Space is the Place is a joyous interplanetary celluloid manifesto exploring race, culture and identity.

Metropolis

Released in 1927, and acknowledged as one of the landmarks of world cinema, Fritz Lang’s epic vision of a futuristic city where workers toil for their domineering overseers has proved an immeasurable influence on science-fiction filmmaking.

This special screening is an opportunity to experience the grandest science fiction film of the silent era (and for many years to come) with a live music soundtrack performed by two of the genre’s finest exponents.
