A SOUTHAMPTON nightclub has renamed its Halloween night after members of the public said its title mocked mental illness.

Bosses at Oceana, in Leisure World, had originally called its themed evening ‘Lunatic Asylum’.

But following a number of comments from unhappy customers on Twitter, the club changed the night’s name to ‘The Haunted Hostel’.

In a statement on the social media platform, the club said: “We would just like to apologise for any offence caused by our Halloween event name - that wasn’t our intention and we would never want to cause our customers, or anyone else, any upset.

“Thank you for bringing it to our attention, the name and theme has been changed and we sincerely apologise.”

The club initially came under fire after Jessica Sainsbury tweeted: “It was brought to my attention today that you are planning on hosting a ‘Lunatic Asylum’ themed night on 31st October.

“I respectfully ask you to reconsider your theming for this event.

“Mocking Mental Illness in any way is not okay.”

Many people praised the club’s decision, including Alex Hovden.

He wrote: “Thank you for dealing with this quickly and with zero hassle.”

David Smith added: “Thank you for the speedy acknowledgement and action. Appreciated.”

‘The Haunted Hostel’ will see performers, actors and pyrotechnics entertain guests throughout the night. It begins at 10pm tonight and runs until 4am.
