A BARMAN was caught drink driving after his final shift before he was made redundant – despite living only 600 metres from work.

Customers from the Jolly Sailor, on Ashlett Road, Fawley, bought Darryl Frampton a variety of alcoholic drinks as the pub closed its doors for the final time earlier this month, a court heard.

The 40-year-old got on his Qingqi QM motorbike and drove towards his home, but part way through his ride, officers pulled Frampton over and he was found to be nearly twice the drink drive limit.

Prosecutor Ryan Seneviratne said Frampton, who had no previous convictions, “smelt strongly of alcohol” and was “slurring” when he spoke to police carrying out patrols in the area.

He told Southampton Magistrates Court that Frampton was arrested and breathalysed, in which he was found to have 67 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Raymond Tan, mitigating, said Frampton was now jobless after the pub closed and customers wanted to buy him a drink to thank him.

“He had just lost his job and was made redundant. His wife also worked for the pub and she lost her job as well. It was his last day and he was very foolish to drive.”

Frampton, of Ashlett Road, Fawley, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above the limit.

He was banned from driving for 18 months and fined £100.

Frampton was also ordered to pay £85 costs and £30 victim surcharge.
