FOR the past few months the city council has been advising us of the importance of recycling all plastics. Plastic bottles via the blue lidded bins collected fortnightly and all other plastics in the bins in various car parks around the city.

Whenever I have been to these bins, they are well used, indicating that a lot of people around the city are making journeys to recycle and help save the planet.

I have read today that Southampton, along with Basingstoke, are now removing these bins and that the plastics that have been collected over the months will now be incinerated. The reason for this was that there was nowhere to recycle these plastics!

Where was the forward planning? It seems very short-sighted to collect many tonnes of plastic waste without any idea of how/where it would be recycled.

Many, many people have wasted time and petrol, adding to the pollution in the city. in the belief that they were doing some good by recycling. From now on it will presumably go into landfill!
