Portsmouth Guildhall’s new Studio, supported by Victorious Festival, opens this Sunday.

The new Guildhall Studio is the first phase in the Renaissance restoration and development programme. It will be a bright, fresh and contemporary performance space that will see an exciting new programme of works including children’s theatre and workshops, contemporary dance, drama, comedy, classical, jazz, blues, folk and world music.

The new venue will be unveiled at the Open Day from 11am-3pm. It’s an opportunity to explore the space and find out about the new Studio arts programme and get involved in live music and performances, children’s workshops and craft and tech demos.

The Studio’s Emerging Creatives programme, supported by Victorious Festival, will benefit emerging artists and musical talent, and local community groups including the Southsea Skiffle Orchestra and the Recharge Singing Group. Tickets for sibling band The Dunwells, delightful shows for children, and a series of October half-term workshops are already on sale.

The Studio programme has been developed by Ben Clabon, Studio Producer & Programmer, and Hayley Reay, Learning & Participation Manager. The Studio programme will support Portsmouth’s emerging artists and musical talent, connecting the Guildhall with people who want to develop themselves creatively both on stage and off. The Studio provides a resource for the city that, thanks to its size and audience capacity, can support emerging artists through contemporary and cutting-edge programming.

“We’re very keen that people in the city come and tell us what they want to see, especially over the next few months as we trial a number of pop-up performances to get a feel for how our programme should develop over time,” says Ben.

It’s also about providing Portsmouth with beautiful, well-crafted performances, such as the two new pieces by Moon on a Stick: “Little Star” for babies and toddlers, and “Land of Nod”, in which people will be able to participate in a yoga session with their child.

Supporting elements of the programme, Hayley and the team are developing supplementary activities and workshops. The Studio provides a practical, welcoming and bespoke space for workshops to take place, and a safe and nurturing environment for creatives.

“Until now we have not had an environment that is fit for purpose,” Hayley explains. “Many of our weekly workshops will move to the Studio when it opens, and we will also be launching new programmes in order to engage new audiences and those who don’t have access to these kinds of provisions already, in order to increase engagement and access to cultural activities.”
