A SOUTHAMPTON man will run 10 miles in memory of his 18-year-old nephew.

47-year-old Gary Prebble will honour the memory of his nephew, who tragically passed away last year, by taking part at the Simplyhealth Great South Run to raise money for Help for Heroes.

Gary’s nephew, Jack Prebble, who was training to be a mechanical engineer in the army, was involved in a road accident when he was 18-years-old.

Daily Echo:

After returning home on leave after recently passing out in the army, he went for a ride on his motorcycle when he lost control of his bike, went into a ditch and hit a tree.

He passed away in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Gary, from Waltham Chase, said: “Jack was a cheeky lad who lived life to the full.

"He decided to join the army and was training to be a mechanical engineer.

"He often did things within the army like the 30 day press up challenge.

“He liked to donate to Help for Heroes, which is why I chose them as my charity.

“Jack was only 18-years-old and passed away just a year ago so dealing with the loss is not something we are coping with very well.”

Help For Heroes is the leading charity for the armed forces community.

The charity provides physical and emotional rehabilitation and recovery, helps identify new career opportunities and offers financial and welfare support to help serving members of the armed forces. ex-service men and women, and their families.

Gary added: “My nephew was in the army so I wanted to do something for him that was going to take grit and determination to achieve as he probably did most days within the army.

“I am not a runner and wanted a challenge so I took part in a 5k run last December in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and it was hard!"

Gary will be taking part in the Great South Run on Sunday, October 21, and will be joined by 20,000 other runners in Portsmouth.
