POLICE have launched an appeal after a woman was left fighting for her life following a crash on a Hampshire road.

A female motorcyclist was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Corsa on the A3057 near Romsey today (Thursday, October 11).

The incident happened outside The Bear and Ragged Staff, near Kimbridge, around 7.20am.

The road was closed in both directions - but has since been reopened.

Now police are appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "We are appealing for witnesses following a road traffic collision between a car and a motorcycle on the A3057 Romsey Road in Stonymarsh this morning (Thursday, October 11).

"The incident occurred at around 7.20am on the A3057 near the junctions with Staff Road and Kimbridge Lane.

"A black Suzuki motorcycle and a green Vauxhall Corsa were involved.

"The Air Ambulance was called to the scene but the female motorcyclist was taken by ambulance to Southampton General Hospital with serious injuries.

"The male driver of the car was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

"The A3057 was closed while investigation and recovery work was carried out but is now fully open."

Paramedics say the sent two ambulances, the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and critical care car, and two units from our Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene.

An ambulance service spokesperson said the female motorcyclist had sustained life-threatening injuries and after initial treatment at the scene was taken by road to the major trauma centre at University Hospital Southampton.

The car driver was assessed and discharged at the scene.

One person who drove past the scene earlier today said: "I've never seen so many emergency service personnel before.

"There was a lot of people round a person on the floor.

"I hope they are okay."
