A SHOP owner was threatened with a crowbar as he tried to defend his post office from two robbers in a “terrifying” raid.

Rajeev Vijayan, 44, postmaster of Whalesmead Post Office in Bishopstoke, was threatened by two crowbar wielding robbers after they kicked in the door to his shop on Tuesday, September 25.

Video footage taken from a CCTV camera shows the pair, who were both wearing motorbike helmets, running into the shop before one jumps over the counter.

Another leans over the counter while a member of staff appears from off-screen, and the second man then threatens him with a crowbar.

They then flee the store and run away.

Police say the pair began to fill a ‘Hippo’ bag with tobacco and threatened to hit Mr Vijayan with the bar after he confronted them.

The duo then fled the scene on a motorbike.

Mr Vijayan, who has been the postmaster of the shop for 10 years, has since described the incident as ‘terrifying’.

He confronted the men during the incident and was threatened with a weapon.

Mr Vijayan said: “Around 10 o’clock I was preparing everything for closing.

“Suddenly I heard a loud noise, then another loud bang and the door was opened.

“It was terrifying.

“As I came down stairs, there were two people on a motorbike and they started stealing tobacco.

“One of them had a gold bar and he tried to hit me with it.

“They cleared the shelf.”

Police say the incident happened sometime between 9.50pm and 10.10pm on Tuesday, September 25.
