AS A professional driver covering around 50,000 miles a year in total private and ‘work’ miles, I read with some concern that so-called smart motorways will enhance journey times and traffic flow.
I am sure that many professional drivers are aware that the motorway itself is not the problem – it is the exit from the motorway that is the problem. Witness the repeated problem at junctions 4 and 2 on the M3 and the repeated accidents at these exits.
The lack of a hard shoulder exacerbates any congestion caused by an accident and one must wonder when will an accent occur because the emergency services cannot gain access to the initial cause.
