REGARDING the letter on the 'danger' of electric cars (letters, September 8) – what a load of nonsense.

My diesel car sounded like a Sherman tank but I lost count of the number of times people walked out in front or behind it without looking. I've driven a fully electric car 45k miles over two years and never experienced a similar incident. Most, if not all, electric cars are equipped with a high-pitch bleeper that sounds as a warning at low speeds (below 20mph).

The high pitch note from the electric motor at higher speeds is probably more audible to most animals too – warning them and reducing the risk of collisions – an all too sickening occurence reported in this paper, all of which are almost certainly caused by dyed-in-the- wool petrol heads who have little regard for anyone or anything else on the road.

If you want to find a silent killer then look no further than the internal combustion engine (that's your car, probably). This silent killer, along with other forms of pollution is destroying the air we breath causing a massive increase in respiratory and other illnesses in old and young alike. Add to this the accelerating impact of CO2- driven climate change, which has been scientifically and conclusively proven to be a major risk to life on earth.

So, think about what you are saying and please look and listen when near any vehicles.
