HAMPSHIRE businesses are invited to help shape the future of “one of the region’s most important economic assets”.

Civic chiefs and business bosses have welcomed plans to expand Southampton Airport and are inviting the community to have their say over the proposals.

As previously reported, Southampton Airport is planning to expand its runaway in a move which management claims would double its passenger numbers over the next decade and create 500 new jobs.

The plans would extend the northern end of the runway by 170m.

Airport bosses said the longer runway would mean aircraft could carry heavier loads and more fuel, allowing them to fly further.

This would bring more Mediterranean destinations within reach of Southampton.

A six-week consultation period is now under way and local businesses and residents are invited to have their say.

Solent LEP business director Kevin George, pictured below left, said: “If we are to drive investment, innovation and sustained growth for the next 100 years, we must also ensure we build on our strengths and continue to improve our international connections.

“We are delighted to see our colleagues at Southampton Airport consulting on aspirations for growth and improved connectivity and encourage all businesses and residents in the Solent to get involved.”

Keith House, leader of Eastleigh Borough Council, pictured above right, said the authority would be making detailed comments to the airport as part of the consultation.

“I am pleased to see the detailed plans for growth put forward by Southampton Airport that will deliver more travel opportunities to avoid road journeys to more distant airports,” he added.

It is predicted the airport will serve four million passengers a year by 2027, rising to five million by 2037.

Eastleigh MP Mims Davies said her aim was to make sure the new opportunities the expansion will create are balanced with environmental concerns and the challenge of growing.

She said: “My experience of the airport is that they are a good, friendly neighbours and I’ll be making sure we are all working together to deliver the thriving airport with a strong environmental footprint.”

Civic chiefs in Southampton said they will also have their say.
