MRS Jones’ letter (Echo, September 17) may have been sent before Brian Hooper explained that we definitely do elect our MEPs. As to not knowing their names, I found them online in a few seconds. The South East region’s MEPs are listed as: Nigel Farage, Daniel Hannan, Janice Atkinson, Nirj Deva, John Howarth, Diane James, Richard Ashworth, Keith Taylor, Catherine Bearder and Raymond Finch.

Alan Blandford’s latest letter, however, is extraordinary. All MEPs are elected by proportional representation, though not all member states use exactly the same form. It’s far from clear what he means by "unelected Euro candidates". A candidate is someone who stands for election, so of course that person is unelected.

He started complaining about unelected EU officials in 2016. In a letter published on December 13 of that year, I challenged him to name some major elected bodies which don’t have unelected officials. He then accepted that I had wrong-footed him.

Given that history, he now seems to be re-moaning to no purpose.
