A SOUTHAMPTON pensioner died of hypothermia after the central heating stopped working in her flat, an inquest heard.
Kathleen Stewart was rushed to Southampton General Hospital on December 5 with breathing difficulties, but died later that day.
Winchester Coroner’s Court heard that the 86-year-old, of Rockleigh Road, Bassett, had a temperature of just 31C when she was admitted to hospital.
According to the NHS, Hypothermia sets in when the body temperature drops below 35C. A healthy temperature is 37C.
Mrs Stewart’s home was being warmed with a small heater while they waited for the central heating to be fixed.
Coroner Grahame Short recorded a conclusion of death due to misadventure.
