WORK is underway on a multimillion-pound overhaul of a ‘dilapidated’ pavilion.

Construction workers started operating on the £2million transformation of Hiltingbury Pavilion into a new, modern sports facility.

Foundations are being laid for the centre, which, once finished, will have a new four-court sports hall and fitness room.

Those behind the project hope the new space will provide up-to-date facilities for sports teams and residents in the area.

However, the plans have proved controversial in the past.

Current chairman of Chandler’s Ford Parish Council, who are responsible for the scheme, previously expressed his strong disagreements with the proposals – before taking over the leadership role.

Concerns include that the modern, charity run facility ‘The Hilt’ will be ‘overshadowed’ by the new centre.

Comments have also been raised referring to the traffic congestion that will be caused by the updated sports pavilion.

Despite issues, Chandler's Ford Parish Council voted narrowly in favour of pushing ahead with the plans.

Recently instated parish council chairman, James Duguid, explained how he voted against the project, describing it as “courageous” but “risky".

But with plans approved, he added the council had to press on with the project.

Cllr Duguid said: “Our job now isn’t to be frozen on the controls, it is to get on and make a success for the community (and commercially.)”

Cllr Duguid said the construction process had so far been "very pleasing" and added that "everything is on track so far" to prepare for the public, towards the end of February 2019.

He added: “It would be good if possible users get in touch with parish council, proposing different activities it could be used for, which are not conflicting with the Hilt- to make sure we get proper use of facilities.”
