AS THE annual three-mile beer race in the New Forest raged, things were made more difficult by the soggy conditions.

The date was September 1, 1985, when 19 teams of four found it tough pushing across open Forest from Fritham’s Royal Oak to the Sir Walter Tyrell.

The winning men’s team, for the fourth successive year was the Tottonian’s Rugby Club’s “Tott's Tornadoes”, comprising Murray Townsend, Andy Smith, Phil Davis and Pete Butcher.

They completed the course in 34,13 minutes – two seconds faster than the rugby club’s “Whirlwind Totts”.

Winning ladies from the Sir Walter Tyrrel completed the course in 40.20 minutes and comprised Jenny Patching, Kerry Cutler, Caroline Cooper and Carol Alexandra. It was their second victory.
