THE programme for a new dance festival has been announced.

The second Folk Dance Southampton day is set to take place in a few days’ time.

Now organisers have released the schedule for the day and say that 17 teams will be taking part - with up to 200 dancers showing their skills across the city.

As reported the first Folk Dance Southampton event took place last year organised by city performers King John’s Morris.

Now the event has grown, with folk “sides” - as they are known - travelling to Southampton from across the country.

As well as Southampton’s oldest Morris side, Red Stags, who formed in 1968 others from around the country include: King John’s Morris Men, Mr Baker’s Dozen, Basing Clog, Devizes Jubilee Morris, Dorset Buttons Rapper, Knights of King Ida, Knock Hundred Shuttle, Mary Rose and Royal George, Moonshine Morris, Moulton Morris Men, Oyster Girls, Quayside Cloggies, Red Stags Morris, Rigel Janior Morris, Sarum Morris, Tatters and Tails and Wickham Morris.

Dances will take place at Palmerston Park, the Rotary Clock, West Quay Above Bar, Bargate, WestQuay South and St Michael’s Square from 11am with a break for lunch from 12.45 - 2pm. At 4pm-5pm there will be a “mass dance” at WestQuay Above Bar.

There will also be a music session at South Hants CAMRA pub of the year 2018 - the Guide Dog on Earls Road.

A spokesman for the organisers said: “After the success of our first event last year we want to make this year’s event bigger and better with more dance sides performing in sunny Southampton. After a busy day of dancing sometimes a session is what you need while resting your legs.”

If you would like to help steward the event you are asked to contact organisers on folkdancesouthampton@gmail.com.

There will also be a ceilidh at St Barnabus Church Hall from 7.30pm.

It takes place on September 15.
