A WINCHESTER care home resident has been recognised as one of Hampshire's Extraordinary Women, for this year's Winchester Heritage Open Days exhibition.

Susan Cook from the Sunrise of Winchester care home was born in Shedfield in 1918.

She joined the Foreign Office and MI5 during World War Two and was sent on a top-secret mission to the US for the British Embassy.

Susan also worked alongside Winston Churchill on two occasions.

When it comes to her interests, Susan speaks four languages, has crossed the Atlantic in twin-propeller aeroplanes eight times as a co-pilot with her husband, and has been an international tennis player.

Dawn Sadler, Director of Community Relations at Sunrise of Winchester, said: “Everyone at Sunrise is thrilled that we have an Extraordinary Woman in our care home. We were so excited to celebrate Susan’s milestone birthday recently, which provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements she has made throughout her 100 years.

"We are delighted that these will now be formally recognised by Winchester Heritage Open Days for the whole community to enjoy.”

Alongside many other Hampshire women, Susan's remarkable life stories will be on display at The Great Hall on September 8,9,13 and 16.
