THE OPENING of the 1967 Eling Fair was the most glamorous anybody could remember in the fair’s 17 years.

The opener, Totton born Janice Kingston, became Miss England the year prior and made the journey from the north for the occasion.

“I like to think of Totton as my home and was very thrilled to be able to come along and perform this ceremony,” she said.

When Janice had finished speaking, the queen from 1966, Christine Paglia rose to crown 23-year-old Iris Payne of Calmore.

Looking on were the queen’s two attendants, Patricia Nash of Testwood and Carolyn Cambridge of Totton.

The new queen thanked Mrs Kingston for opening the fair and offered Totton’s congratulations on her recent marriage and wished the newly married pair every success and happiness.

Bouquets for the queen, her two attendants, Miss Paglia and Mrs Kingston were presented by the little girls.

Two of them were nieces of the queen - Karen and Julie Saunders - and the other three were Kay Gingell , Julie Matcham and and Deborah Jones.
