IT WAS built decades ago, but still no-one knows what to call it.

Now a city councillor is teaming up with local residents to give a Southampton housing estate a name.

Known locally as Waterside Park, the estate comprises nine roads and sits between Weston and Woolston.

But after checking council records and documents, Councillor Warwick Payne says a name was never officially given to the area, near Weston Shore Promenade, like “a person being born without a birth certificate”.

As a result he is carrying out a door-to-door survey until the end of August to ask locals about their thoughts.

Choices include: Jurds Lake; Redrow Estate; Rolling Mills; and Waterside Park.

Residents can also offer their own name suggestions.

Following the survey, Southampton City Council and the Ordnance Survey will be petitioned to officially adopt the chosen name.

This, Cllr Payne says, will put the area “well and truly on the map”.

“Having checked with the council, this estate has no official name, which is like a person being born without a birth certificate,” said the Woolston member.

“It seems to be known by different names to different people, whether it’s Waterside Park or the Rolling Mills or the Redrow Estate.

“The aim of my survey is to clear away the confusion and give the residents the right to officially name their estate by a majority vote, and then see if we can get the winning choice placed firmly on the Southampton map for generations to come.

“If there’s a clear winner, I’ll seek to get the council and the Ordnance Survey to adopt the name to give the estate a greater sense of community and identity. I’ll be fascinated to see which name tops the poll.”

Surveys will be delivered to residents of the estate throughout August.
