MR FROST (Echo Letters, July 27) may have not been best pleased to receive his recent flyer from his MP Royston Smith, but the flyer was accurate and designed to alert the public to Labour’s plans.

As someone who also understands the Queen’s English, I was concerned to read in last week’s council papers (Item 9 - Labour’s Commitments) that Labour are ‘committed to the introduction of a Clean Air Zone which will include charging for HGV, buses, and taxis.’

The consultation is a sham as Labour has already made up its mind.

Furthermore, a couple of weeks earlier at the Health & Wellbeing Board (Labour chairman), several speakers urged not only HGVs, buses and taxis to be charged, but also cars – as the only way to improve air quality.

I have no doubt that once Labour start charging, they will not stop until they charge cars. There are many ways in which air quality may be improved – and it needs to be done with the people not to the people.

It was also rather sad to read ex-councillor Letts’ rather bitter letter which typically played the ‘premature death’ card when Public Health refuses to link air quality with premature deaths through lack of evidence.

Indeed, Public Health cannot even say that health will be improved should there be a Clean Air Zone. But then, Mr Letts has never worried about the veracity of his statements. And, Mr Letts, there can only be one thing worse than losing a general election vote by 31, and that is losing a general election vote by 31 to someone whom you feel has no influence and no ideas.
