YOUNG musicians gathered to rehearse for a one-off show.

The talented children from across Southampton were part of a brand new orchestra.

Led by the artistic director of the city's own professional orchestra - Son - it was the first time the young musicians had ever played as part of an orchestra. Their three day experience was a bid to get them used to playing with others, as well as developing their music reading skills - and of course enjoying putting on a performance.

Playing Star Wars, Bolero and their very own composition, called the Supersonic Suite, the six to 14-year-olds rehearsed at Woodlands Community College before putting on a concert for friends and parents.

Conductor Robin Browning said: "This is the third year we've done it but this is the first time we have created our own piece. For many of them it's the first experience of playing in a full orchestra."

The project has been organised by Southampton Music Hub and Son.

Children paid £110 with a fifty per cent discount for those on pupil premium.
