“GET on your bike!” That’s the message from a Wessex heart charity, which is urging people to saddle up and take part in its third annual cycle challenge.

The Wessex Heartbeat Cycle Challenge is set to take place on September 30 and those behind the event are urging cyclists in Southampton to pull on the Lycra and get involved.

Back by popular demand, the event features two different distances; a 40 mile route or a 70 miler for those really looking to push themselves. Both start and finish in the grounds of Hampshire Collegiate School in Wellow and go through the market town of Romsey, over to Winchester and through the Test Valley to Stockbridge.

The shorter route travels back through East Tytherley, Lockerley and back to the school.

The longer route travels over to Winterslow, Old Sarum before reaching Salisbury and then follows a route through Alderbury, West Dean before finally arriving back at Romsey.

John Munro, chief executive of Wessex Heartbeat, said: “With the great weather we’ve been having lately we’ve seen hundreds of cyclists out and about around Hampshire. We’re throwing down the gauntlet and challenging them to take part. With the event taking place in September, there’s plenty of time left to train and it’ll be a fantastic way to round off the summer cycling season.”

John adds that a cycle challenge is a fitting way to raise money for Wessex Heartbeat which, as well as supporting those affected by heart disease, works to improve the cardiac health of people in Southampton.

“Our ultimate goal is to help reduce the number of people affected by coronary heart disease and cycling is a brilliant way of keeping fit,” he said. “If you know anyone affected by heart disease or has used the services of the Wessex Cardiac Centre at Southampton General Hospital we’d urge you to hop on your bike and join us.”

Entry to the Wessex Heartbeat Cycle Challenge is just £20 for the 40 mile route and £25 for the £70 mile route. Both require a minimum £100 sponsorship for Wessex Heartbeat.
