HAVING read today's headlines from the Echo (July 17) I'm amazed but not surprised by the need for a new secondary school in our city.

It is not that long ago, when at the time this country was pursuing an open-door immigration policy, and primary school places were becoming increasingly difficult to find, that our wonderful council, in its wisdom, decided to close Woolston Secondary School.

Even the not-very-bright among us realised that these primary children would indeed age and need a secondary education.

Maybe one day our councillors will look a bit further ahead rather than short-term policies, but I won't hold my breath.
