A SOUTHAMPTON man remains in custody this morning as police continue to investigate a serious crash on a busy city road.

The 22-year-old was one of four people arrested yesterday on suspicion of attempted murder yesterday, following a crash on Weston Lane, Southampton.

A 17-year-old girl, an 18-year-old man and a 27-year-old man, all from Southampton, were also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police have now revealed they also arrested a 20-year-old man and a 21-year-old man.

However, officers say those five have now been released and no further action will be taken.

Police continue to question the remaining 22-year-old man.

It comes after a 19-year-old, also from Southampton, was rushed to University Hospital Southampton after he was involved in a crash with a car yesterday around 4am outside Chamberlayne Leisure Centre.

Four people in the car were located and arrested a few hours after the incident.

Officers have confirmed the motorcycle involved in the incident was stolen and that the injured person on the vehicle was wearing a helmet.

A spokesperson for the force said they were not linking the incident to the spate of car thefts and burglaries that has been plaguing the city, adding: “We still are trying to ascertain the exact circumstances of what happened at this early stage.”

A resident who lives nearby but did not want to be named said: “The lights flashing woke me. That was at about 4am.

"I saw a motorbike on the road and a car upside down. I could see a red light that was a fire brigade. There was one fire engine and police cars.”

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said a crew from Hightown Fire Station was sent to the scene at 3.48am and left at 4.30am.

South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) was also called.

A spokesman for SCAS said: “We sent an ambulance to the scene and the crew treated the male cyclist, in his 20s, at the scene initially as he had sustained a serious head injury, before then taking him to University Hospital Southampton.”

Weston Lane was closed during the day from its junction with Wright’s Hill.

The area outside Chamberlayne Leisure Centre was cordoned off and officers spent hours at the scene. Bus company First Southampton diverted its X4 and X5 services, which usually use Weston Lane, via Wright’s Hill and towards Southampton.

Royston Smith, MP for Southampton Itchen, said: “This is a shocking incident and my thoughts are with the injured motorcyclist and his family.

"It is for the police to decide what action will need to be taken.

"I am, however, left thinking about how much worse this could have been, especially if it was later in the day and children were visiting the nearby playground.”
