A FIFTH teenager has been arrested as part of a police crackdown on burglaries in Southampton and Eastleigh.

It follows a spate of incidents in which burglars broke into homes, found keys to cars and bikes and stole the vehicles.

In response, Hampshire Constabulary launched Operation Hawk – a plan to crackdown on the summer crimewave, which took place across Southampton and Eastleigh between May and July.

Police previously arrested four teenagers, aged between 16 and 18, in relation to the spate of burglaries.

Today officer say they've arrested a fifth teenager.

The 18-year-old man, from Eastleigh, has been arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and assaulting a police officer.

He remains in police custody at this time.

Another 18-year-old and a 16-year-old have also been arrested, but have been released under investigation by police.

Officers have also charged Levi Allan, 18, of Coxford Road, Southampton, with allowing to be carried in a motor vehicle without the owner's consent.

He is due to appear at Southampton Magistrates' Court on August 16.

Another 16-year-old boy from Southampton has also been charged with burglary - but cannot be named for legal reasons.

Police say they are continuing to investigate the burglaries.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We have increased patrols in Bitterne, Sholing, Portswood, Hedge End and West End which are the areas that have been affected and we will continue to pursue those responsible.

"Bitterne and Sholing are the most affected areas.

"We would ask the public to help prevent these crimes too by following our crime prevention advice.

"Remember to lock accessible windows and doors.

"Don't leave your keys in the lock and place well away from the door."
