ALMOST 1,000 young people from across Hampshire united for a service of peace at Winchester Cathedral, to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.

The service was attended by young people and leaders from more than 25 uniformed organisations and schools including the Scouts, Guides, Boys’ Brigade, Girls’ Brigade and Cadets from Hampshire Police, Hampshire Fire & Rescue, St. John Ambulance, the Navy, Airforce and Army and Combined Cadet Forces.

The service was also attended by Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire and the Lord Bishop of Winchester.

Music inside the Cathedral was be provided by the Hampshire Youth Choir and the Spitfires Scout & Guide Band from Eastleigh.

Martin Rudd, chair of the organising group, member of the Cathedral Council and deputy county commissioner of Hampshire scouts said: “It was wonderful to see so many young people come together in a display of unity and to say in effect, that this must never happen again, after all it is their world and their future.”

The Very Reverend Catherine Ogle, Dean of Winchester, said: “We were honoured to host this significant and poignant occasion for young people, reminding us of the tragic loss of young life in WW1.

"Bringing so many different groups together demonstrates how young people can work together for peace and to build a better world for generations to come.

"This is an inspirational event and we are grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make it possible.”
