HAMPSHIRE were going carnival crazy in June 1978 - as can be seen in these pictures from Daily Echo snappers at the time.
It was a big month for firsts in the world of sports as Naomi James became the first woman to sail around the world single-handedly and Ian Botham became the first man in history to have scored a century and taken eight wickets in one innings of a test match.
On June 3, Frederick Laker, the English airline entrepreneur, was knighted. Sir Freddie Laker was one of the the first airline owners to adopt the no-frills airline business model. He died at the age of 83 on February 9, 2006, from complications during a cardiac surgery to implant a pacemaker.
On June 21, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Evita opened at the Prince Edward Theatre in London. The show went on to become the first British musical to receive the Tony Award for Best Musical.
That same day, shooting between Provisional IRA members and the British Army resulted in the death of one civilian and three IRA men.
