HMS SULTAN opened up the gates to around 1,500 disabled and deserving children and their parents and carers for an evening of entertainment at the Summer Show’s Children’s Party.

The invitation only event is a regular fixture in the Establishment’s calendar and marks the beginning of the HMS Sultan Summer Showweekend.

It remains the only event where sailors, from the Gosport base, are given permission to dress as pirates, as the children in attendance enjoy some swashbuckling fun.

Packed full of live entertainment, The party included displays by the Green Rockets Children’s Motorcycle Display Team, and a free fun fair.

In addition, activities manned by Sultan personnel included traditional fair games like Soak-a-sailor, air frames displays, an interactive Engineering Zone and the Sultan Super Sentinel Steam lorry.

The Commanding Officer of HMS Sultan Captain Peter Towell said: “The Children’s Party provides a wonderful platform to support local disabled and deserving children and for the Establishment to mark the beginning of the HMS Sultan Summer Show weekend.”

“The children get to enjoy an exclusive preview of the Show with their carers or families in a quieter, less crowded environment, before it opens up to the general public on Saturday and Sunday.”

“Seeing the children engage with our sailors who have been dressed as pirates has been brilliant. They’ve clearly enjoyed the experience and I hope the families in attendance have also felt welcome.”

Thousands of visitors enjoyed an exciting Father’s Day weekend at the show.

The not-for-profit show was jam-packed with high quality arena entertainment including monster trucks, a steam fayre and motorcycle displays with the Royal Naval Volunteer Cadet Corps Field Gun and the HMS Sultan Volunteer Band ensuring the show was in keeping with the best of naval traditions.

outside of the main arena an enormous funfair, a free fun and games arena, petting zoo, static airframe displays, creepy crawlies, craft and chairties tents, classic cars and a Georgian Gun Deck Experience based around the Battle of Trafalgar kept visitors entertained.

In addition, guests were also given the opportunity to book their own ride on the ‘Red Dragon; Moster Ride Truck.
