A HIGH speed chase was sparked after gun shots were fired in a residential road in Southampton.

Police are probing the incident after reports the car was shot at in Swaythling.

Officers say the occupants of a blue Ford Focus fired at the windscreen of a silver Vauxhall Astra.

The cars then entered into a high speed chase down a busy Southampton road, overtaking several vehicles in the process.

Police say the incident began just before 8pm on Wednesday, June 13, on Walnut Avenue, Swaythling.

The chase moved onto Wide Lane and then along the A27 towards Church Hill, where both cars overtook six vehicles.

There were several people in both cars.

No one was reported as injured.

Detective Inspector Colin White said: “We have been following up these reports to ascertain the exact circumstances of what occurred.

“We have had a positive response from members of the public so far and we continue to follow up extensive lines of enquiry.

“However it is important that we contact any other witnesses who may be able to assist us, especially the drivers of the vehicles overtaken by these two cars on Church Hill.

“Were you driving on the A27 between Wide Lane and Church Hill on Wednesday night and do you have dash cam footage?

“Albeit this incident was reported to have happened in a residential area, incidents like this are very rare in Hampshire and we do not believe there is a risk to the wider public.”

If you have information or footage that may assist police, call 101.
