HE WAS the Hampshire man who was as much a part of Eastleigh as The Swan Centre or the bandstand - a well-known member of the town’s society.

Danny Gilbert’s legendary shop window showpieces at Gilbert Fishmongers in Market Street, Eastleigh, captured history by making displays of important occasions including royal weddings.

Southampton-born Danny, who lived in Bishopstoke, was known by almost everybody in Eastleigh as he spent the majority of his time at the shop, whittling away the hours on elaborate displays. He often didn’t leave the premises until early hours of the morning.

After 32 years of running the shop, Mr Gilbert retired in 2000. After suffering from ill health for a couple of years of, he died in March 2013 at the age of 75, leaving behind his wife Margaret and daughter Alison

On these pages are a selection of pictures of Mr Gilbert’s special and locally-renowned displays.
