Bomb disposal experts sent to the scene, in Water Lane, Winchester, after the ordinance was discovered at around 1.30pm on Friday, June 8.

Officers had closed off Water Lane, Blue Ball Hill and Wales Street as a result.

The cordon was then further down Water Lane, with homes being evacuated as a precaution.

Now the bomb, which civic chiefs say is a World War One shell, has been detonated in a control explosion.

Winchester City Council has since released a video of the detonation (below), along with a thank-you to those who helped deal with the shell.

A spokesperson for the council said: "This is the amazing moment that a WW1 shell was detonated in a controlled explosion, after being found in the river Itchen last week.

"Our thanks to The Royal Logistic Corps, Hampshire Constabulary and our own staff for their quick response.

"Special thanks also to our residents and visitors for their patience whilst the incident was dealt with."
