Southampton Bike Week starts today with a series of rides around the city’s lesser known cycle routes

The family friendly rides are open to all and a chance to see just how far two wheels can take you

Organiser Stephen Edwards from Southampton Cycling Campaign said: “We want as many people as possible to get their bikes out of the shed and get back to cycling.

“Not everyone is familiar with the cycle paths and safe routes so this is a chance to try them out.”

On June 9 from 2-4pm from Parklife Café, St James Park take part in a slow and sedate Shirley Ride with picnics before and after. All ages and abilities; children are welcome but be aware that the route will be on roads as well as cycle lanes.

On June 10 from 10am-1.30pm from Central Station north side. A ride to Romsey via Lee Lane and back via Nursling. This is a British Cycling guided ride for new and returning cyclists.

June 11 6.30-8.30pm from the Hawthorns Centre, The Common. A leisurely ride round the Common and Southampton Sports Centre along quiet, linking roads.

June 13 10.30am from The Ship pub in Redbridge. A ride to The Shoe Inn, Wellow for lunch. A 28 mile round trip at 10–11 mph.

June 13 from 6.30pm - 10pm from Palmerston Park bandstand - a ride to Hamble with pub stops along the National Cycling Network via Weston Shore and Victoria Country Park. This is a British Cycling guided ride for new and returning cyclists

June 15 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm from Guildhall Square Mettricks. A ride to Eastleigh via Riverside Park and cycle paths or quiet roads. Refreshments at The Pavilion on the Park. Return via North Baddesley. A British Cycling guided ride

June 15 at 6:30 – 10:00 pm from Riverside Park by Cobden Bridge. A ride to Durley with refreshments at Farmer’s Home Pub via West End and Hedge End cycle paths and country lanes.

June 16 at 2:00 – 4:00 pm from the ramp at Riverside Park. A relaxing circular riverside ride via Woodmill, the Boardwalk and Northam Bridge. A ride to support the Clean Air street party in Bitterne Triangle after. All ages and abilities; children are welcome but be aware that the route will be on roads as well as cycle lanes.

The week ends with Let’s Ride on June 17

Everyone is asked to bring waterproofs and bike lights

Over 12s are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult while the under 12s are welcome on Saturday rides or in cargo bikes or on bike seats.

The rides are free and described as easy paced and are led by experienced cyclists.
