A HAMPSHIRE mum has described the traumatic moment a stolen moped crashed into her car, injuring her five-year-old son.

Amy English was driving along Hollyoak Road in Southampton when the moped “came out of nowhere” and smashed into the front of her VW Golf.

The machine, said Amy, was being ridden by a teenager whose face was hidden by a balaclava.

Police say a 13-year-old was later arrested on suspicion of stealing a motor vehicle.

Amy’s son, Rudy Arnatt, suffered bruising to his neck in the accident and was treated at Southampton General Hospital.

The crash is the latest in a spate of incidents involving mopeds across the city.

Last week a masked moped gang tried to carjack drivers waiting at traffic lights at Portswood Place, Charlotte Place and on the M271 at Nursling.

In April nuisance riders were caught in the field behind Coxford Community Centre.

The accident involving Amy and her son happened at 6.15pm on Saturday as the pair returned from a day out in the New Forest.

Amy, 29, of Coxford Road, Southampton, said: “The moped shot out of a junction without any thought for other road users and hit my vehicle.

“The rider flew up into the air and landed on my bonnet before rolling off and running away.

“My car is probably a write-off and my son ended up in A&E because of the force of the impact.

“It was a serious crash – terrifying for me and traumatic for my son.

“A friend took us to hospital and we were there for about three hours. I’ve been told to keep an eye on Rudy and take him back if he needs to be looked at again.

“It’s left me feeling angry and shaken up. I’m furious that someone has hurt my son, especially in this way.”

A police spokesman said: “We were called at 6.31pm on May 26 to a report of a road traffic collision in Holly Oak Road, Southampton.

“The collision involved a moped and a car. A child passenger sustained bruising to his neck in the collision. No other injuries were reported.

“A 13-year-old boy from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. He has since been released from custody but remains under investigation.”
