MY FAMILY and I recently visited Hollybrook Cemetery, on the occasion of what would have been my son's 30th birthday.

The grass was almost knee high, the bins full to overflowing.

The cemetery had an atmosphere of total neglect.

I visited again today (Sunday, May 20) and sadly there was no sign of any improvement.

The local authority has posted a notice on the board at the cemetery entrance to the effect that families who do not wish the grass to be cut around their graves, should notify the cemeteries department.

I am unaware of a mass response from the public to this effect, but apparently Southampton City Council knows something we don't.
