HUNDREDS of competitors are expected to flock to Hamble this weekend as a popular event is to return.

Hundreds of rowers, canoeists, kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders are to take part in the Hamble Raid on May 19.

They will be involved in a series of races from Hamble Quay to the Jolly Sailor pontoon and back.

Now in its 13th year, the annual charity rowing and paddling race will also raise money for the Hamble Sea Scouts.

Ann Freeman, one of the organisers, said: "It is a fun event and provides plenty of spectator excitement, as the boats leave and return to the shoreline on Hamble foreshore. It first started to raise money for Hamble Sea Scout and has grown in popularity."

Ms Freeman, who organises the event with a group of Hamble residents, said it is open to people of all ages.

"It's become a popular event for Hamble. It's got so popular after we lost the Hamble Week and it's something the whole community now looks forward to. It's also good for the local businesses and helps the local economy,"she said.

And added: "Everyone can have fun. It's for people to watch and for people to take part in it. If they can paddle something they can come and have a go. Anybody can have a go."

Refreshments will be provided and will include a hog roast.

The event will start at 1.30pm.
