There were few Surprises in Fareham as control of the borough remained firmly in the hands of the party that has done so for almost 20 years.

Conservatives celebrated as they comfortably retained control over the council, while snatching a former Liberal Democrat safe seat and winning with commanding majorities in most wards.

Of the 16 seats up for grabs The Tories secured 12, including former Liberal Democrat safe seat; Fareham East -which new Conservative Councillor Tom Davies won with 49 per cent of the vote.

Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Sean Woodward, once again retained control off his seat in Sarisbury despite the election being his toughest in 33 years of campaigning.

However, by the end of the night he was delighted with the results.

He said: “I’m absolutely elated that we managed to gain a Liberal Democrat safe seat. It’s a huge vote of confidence by the people of Fareham and now we have to carry on delivering for them”

The Liberal Democrats retained three seats, and Fareham’s only elected independent candidate,( and Saints supporter) Jack Englefield retained his seat in Titchfield Common.

He said: “I’m over the moon to win my seat and would like to thanks everyone who helped me, and voted for me.

Against two giants like Labour and the Conservatives it feels like a real achievement and makes all the hard work, worthwhile.”

Though Labour did not win any seats, they did enjoy an increased share of the vote, coming second in several wards.

The elections saw a respectable turn out of 37 per cent of those eligible to vote in the borough choosing to exercise their democratic right.
