A SUSPICIOUS letter which triggered an alert at an MP's office contained no hazardous chemicals.

Police, fire and ambulance services were all called to Caroline Nokes' office in Market Square, Romsey, at about midday today.

A cordon was set up and forensic officers could be seen working in the building.

Caroline Nokes MP said: "This morning staff in my Constituency Office opened an envelope which contained a suspicious substance. They followed guidelines, evacuated the office and informed the Police immediately.

"At this stage it appears this was a hoax and I am relieved that all those involved are safe and well.

"My thanks, of course, go to the emergency services who have dealt with the incident so swiftly and professionally."

Residents were shocked by the scenes in the market town and took to social media to show their surprise.

Hampshire Police have now confirmed that the package contained no hazardous material.

A statement says: "Officers attended the scene with colleagues from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and South Central Ambulance Service, as is routine with this type of incident.

"A cordon was put in place as a precaution while tests were carried out to establish what the substance was.

"Following those tests we can confirm that the substance is not hazardous and there is no risk to the public.

"The cordon is being lifted and we will have some officers remaining at the scene to conclude our enquiries.

"We would like to thank those in Romsey for their patience while we dealt with this incident.

"As we are sure you can appreciate, we have to take certain measures to ensure the safety of the public until we know for certain what we are dealing with."
