A RABBIT has been dumped on a doorstep in Southampton – along with an offensive note.

The RSPCA has begun an investigation after a city resident reported the incident.

She said she has no idea why it happened and believes whoever is responsible got the wrong address.

The animal welfare charity was contacted on the evening of March 17 by the resident, who has not been identified, after the incident in the Outer Circle, near Lordshill.

RSPCA Inspector Alan Browning went to the home to collect the abandoned bunny.

He said: "The woman was very shocked and the note that had been left was particularly insulting.

"It also included another nasty comment which we have decided not to release.

"To abandon an animal like this – especially during the cold, snowy weather we have been having – is inexcusable. But to use a rabbit in some attempt to hit back at someone personally is even more heinous."

The Echo has decided not to print the comment that was left with the rabbit.

Alan added: "She has no idea who was responsible for dumping the rabbit or writing the note and she told me she has never owned a rabbit and does not know where it came from.

"She doesn't believe the rabbit and note were aimed at her.

"We are treating the rabbit as a stray so if he is not claimed by his rightful owners we will look for a loving new home for him."

The lop-eared rabbit, now called Jonny, has been taken to the RSPCA's Stubbington Ark branch in Fareham.

He is in a good condition, according to the welfare charity.

Hampshire police confirmed that a rabbit in a box had been dumped on someone's doorstep but said no offences had been identified.

Hannah Nandhra, who works at the Fareham branch, said: "He is very friendly, inquisitive and easy to handle. He has settled in very well here and is already a favourite with the small animal team!

Anyone who recognises Jonny is asked to call the appeal line through 0300 123 8018 and leave a message.
