WINCHESTER academic Emma Clery will be giving a talk on an unusual subject later this month.

Prof Clery with Helen Paul will talk on Jane Austen, Money and the Hyde Abbey Connection, on September 21, 7.30 pm, Winchester School of Art, West Side Lecture Theatre, Park Avenue).

Prof Clery, who lives in Hyde, is Professor of English at University of Southampton, and has just published a book title Jane Austen: the Banker’s Sister (Biteback).

She is expert on Austen's banking connections to reveal why her new association with the £10 banknote is so appropriate. Her brother Henry Austen ran a small empire of country banks (two of them in Hampshire, at Alton and Petersfield) with London headquarters.

She took a lively interest in his business affairs, stayed with him on many occasions, and presented an informed picture of economic change in her fiction.
