CONDITIONS were terrible in Southampton last night as snow and ice caused traffic chaos.

Many people were stuck in their cars overnight on the A31 and steeper roads in Southampton caused huge problems for motorists.

But despite the horrible weather, residents rallied round to help each other.

Here are some of your stories:

  • Community spirit was in evidence at Cobden Avenue as a group got together to help stricken motorists

  • Resident Sam got in touch and said: I was helped by loads of strangers yesterday when i was stuck of Coxford Road. Aomeone towed me out using his van to a safe parking space and then gave me a lift almost all the way home.  Their kindness was really quite touching."
  • Rosemary Oswald says: "I was one of many who had to be pushed up Dale Road yesterday afternoon, so much good will and community spirit. Huge thanks to those who helped me and my two children."
  • Charlaine Reeve got in touch to say: "After collecting my young daughter from nursery at 5pm, I had to abandon my car in the city centre outside the Flying Dutchman pub. They were fantastic and took me and my young daughter in whilst we waited for my partner and neighbour to collect us in his 4x4. They also helped push cars up towards Central Bridge road. Have to give a huge thumbs up to my neighbour Nick also, as he and some others helped tow cars that got stuck up Townhill Road by Meggeson avenue in their 4x4s all evening!"
  • Kathryn Swindells said: "I’d like to give a shout out to the guys helping motorists on Warren Avenue get up the hill onto Winchester Road last night. One person was clearing the road with a shovel and they were pushing cars and advising motorists on how best to start on a hill.. Bunch of heros!"
  • Harriet Bennett got in touch to thank everyone who helped on Lordswood Road. She said: "There were about 10 people last night on the big hill on Lordswood Road helping cars to get up the hill by physically pushing the cars and salting the roads in the quickest way they could. My car became stuck a few times on the hill but the people helped me and helped to keep the cars moving trying to ensure everyone was able to get home. It was an amazing thing to see people helping out of goodwill. Thank you to all who helped on the steep hill. You really made a huge difference to all who were struggling to get up the hill and helped to keep traffic moving. "
