AN ICE weather warning has been issued by the Met Office as temperatures are set to plunge.

The warning is in place from 6pm this evening until 10am on Thursday and could see sleet and rain fall.

In Southampton the temperature is expected to drop to 3C with a "feels like" temperature of -1C.

A Met Office statement says: "Following a spell of rain, sleet and snow, temperatures will fall quickly allowing ice to form on untreated surfaces.

"Further showers of rain, sleet and snow will follow in the west on Thursday morning, potentially diluting overnight treatments.

"Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

"Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces are possible."

Hampshire Highways confirmed that gritters will head out across the county from 6.30pm this evening.

A statement: "Our crews will be out from 18:30 ahead of the cold snap with a possible second run on our northern and central routes due to possible showers."
