They’re an international charitable organisation with a Protestant Christian denomination.

Their founders, Catherine and William Booth, started the charity in 1865 as a way to bring salvation to the poor, destitute and hungry by helping with their “physical and spiritual needs”.

They now have a membership of more than 1.5m, made up of soldiers, officers and adherents known as Salvationists.

Some of those members come from Hampshire – some of which are featured in these pictures.

A few of the photos carry a musical theme, one such being from Fareham’s Fernham Hall where the Salvation Army Choir hired the venue to record their third album.

Other images were taken at the charity’s various goodwill centres and citadels where they dished up hot meals to those in need.

Wedding bells rang out in 1981 for Cheryl Honey and Peter Yates, both Salvationists, as they married each other at one of the citadels.
