A SPECIALIST police team rushed out to the mouth of a Hampshire river this morning after a man was spotted in the water.

Hampshire Constabulary's Marine Unit were called out to the River Hamble at around 11am today after a man reportedly walked in from the shore.

Lifeboats and the coastguard also rushed to help the man, who was seen in the mouth of the river, near Warsash.

According to the police, the man was a "non-compliant missing person" and was "determined to harm himself".

Police successfully rescued the man from the river and he was passed over to South Central Ambulance Service for treatment.

He was later taken to Southampton General Hospital.

However police say there are no reported injuries at this time.

A spokesperson for the coastguard confirmed they received a call at 10.55 and sent out one lifeboat crew from Hamble Lifeboat Station.
