HAMBLE Club boss Ben Kneller says his side are “overwhelmed” to reach the last 16 of the FA Vase in their debut season in the competition.

No one really gave the Monks a prayer ahead of Saturday’s fourth round tie at Westfields.

But the Sydenhams Premier outfit – a Hampshire Division One side just three seasons ago – upset the odds with an extraordinary 4-1 victory.

Hamble hearts are now set on making more history on February 3 when they face another away trip to Windsor FC of the Hellenic Premier Division.

With his side trailing 1-0 at Westfields, Kneller gave skipper Liam Crook a bit of a pep talk to get the Monks going.

Their response was magnificent as two goals apiece from Nathan Lynch and Nick Watts propelled them into dreamland.

Kneller said: "We had a game plan, but we started poorly and I turned to Liam at half-time and said: ‘You’re the captain. Do you want to lead the team out at Wembley?’ and he said: ‘Of course I do.’

“We were probably lucky to go in 1-0 down, but in the second half came the performance we knew we could deliver. The smiles on the lads' faces were great!

"There wasn't one player that walked off that pitch that didn't have a good game.

“The Vase is a new venture for us, but, as people keep telling me, you never know!

“Windsor are mid-table, which probably belies how good they are; we’re mid-table and we know we’re good on our day.

"If we go there and play like we did second half on Saturday, we’ve got a chance.

"We've got a big January ahead of - starting at home to Alresford tomorrow in the Sydenhams League Cup - but with a bit of luck we'll still have some fresh legs for February.

"A lot of people are saying we're a cup side and I hope they're right."

*Blackfield & Langley face a far longer journey if they get past Bracknell Town in tomorrow's replay in Berkshire. The winners go to Newcastle Benfield or Coleshill Town.

Having had goalkeeper Brad Snelling sent off just 38 minutes into Saturday’s 3-3 extra-time draw, Watersiders boss Glenn Howes confessed: “It’ll be a welcome relief to go and play 11 v 11 tonight.

"Bracknell play on 4G and they’re used to it.

"But the only way to play on 4G is to get the ball down and pass it and we don’t mind that.”

Given what happened to Snelling, B&L's co-assistant boss Chris Farrell is just happy to get a second bite of the cherry.

"Ten seconds after Brad had been sent off, who would have thought we'd still be in it now?" he said.

"But these boys will not lie down for anyone. If there's one thing we're good at, it's defending, and we certainly had to defend on Saturday.

"We couldn't have done any more than we did, the lads ran themselves to a standstill. They deserve enormous credit for not lying down against a good side."

Despite their ten-man handicap, Blackfield so nearly won it in normal time after Rudy Plummer had reclaimed the lead following Sam Poole's opener.

But victory was cruelly snatched away by a spectacular last-gasp leveller from Jamie McClurg.

Blackfield led for a third time through Sam Griffin in extra time before TJ Bohane pulled the Robins back on terms once more.

"We're under no illusions about the replay. Bracknell have a good home record and we know it's going to be tough," added Farrell.

"Hopefully we'll have some luck on our side this time - because we didn't get any on Saturday."

Newport IW will be away to Marske Utd or Hinckley Town if they come through Saturday’s delayed tie at home to Bradford Town.
