VOLUNTEERS at a Hampshire charity had a surprise visit from a top TV star.

Actor Clive Mantel took time out from his busy schedule as evil Abanazar in Ferneham Hall’s Aladdin pantomime to give Christmas wishes to volunteers at the Titchfield based charity Breast Cancer Haven Wessex.

Best known for roles in Casualty and The Vicar of Dibley Clive played consultant Mike Barratt in Casualty and Holby City.

He appeared in over 100 episodes of the popular hospital TV shows from 1988 until 2001, returning for the 30th anniversary episodes in 2016.

He said: “I was delighted to be able to come along and meet so many fantastic people who give up their time to help others.

“I was lucky enough to be shown around the centre and it is such an amazing facility for people locally.

“I have heard how the charity raises money to help local people with breast cancer and their next campaign which is their Tea Cosy campaign in March sounds wonderful.”

He added: “I certainly raised a brew for breast cancer while I was there, and hopefully lots of people will have a tea party next year and help them raise lots of money.”

Sally Hillyear, fundraising manager said: “We are so thankful to Clive for taking time out from the panto and visiting the Centre.

“Our volunteers loved meeting him, and enjoying a mulled wine and mince pie with him.

“Clive very kindly also recorded a short film to help us launching our Tea Cosy campaign which will be shared in January.

“We rely heavily on our volunteers and without them we wouldn’t be able to raise the vital monies to help people coping with the effects of breast cancer.

“It costs about £1,000 per visitor and we are helping more and more people each year.”
