DRIVERS are facing long delays on major routes around Winchester after a crash between two lorries closed the A34.

The road had originally been closed southbound between A272/Three Maids Hill and the A33 Basingstoke Road as a result of the incident, but the closure has since been extended to the A303 at Bullington Cross.

Police closed the southbound carriageway at around 1.30pm, after the crash blocked the road around 10 minutes earlier.

There are currently delays of around 50 minutes on the A34.

There are also reports of 20-minute delays on Andover Road as a result.

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) said the crash involved two lorries, with one of the lorries leaking diesel onto the carriageway as a result.

The spokesman added that HFRS crews from Winchester, Eastleigh and Redbridge fire stations are working to plug the leak.
