NEW Theatre Royal will host an exciting outdoor performance of Shakespeare’s masterpiece, The Tempest in Portsmouth on Wednesday.

One of Shakespeare’s greatest gems will be performed by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, the UK’s premier all-male theatre company, in the peaceful setting of Gatcombe Park on Copnor Road, Portsmouth.

This is the first time since re-opening that New Theatre Royal has hosted an Open Air Theatre production, and with its focus on increasing accessibility to productions, New Theatre Royal chose one of the most popular parks in the area for the venue, whilst keeping the prices as low as possible to encourage Hampshire audiences to enjoy high quality theatre productions.

Shakespeare’s classic play remains just as relevant to us all today in its examination of the power of true love, our capacity for vengeance and what it takes to forgive.

Featuring high comedy, romance and soaring poetry, audiences will hear the tale of Prospero, and his daughter, exiled on an island after a betrayal from his brother.

Combining magical wonder with raw and genuine human emotion, The Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s most enchanting plays that captivates audiences across the world.

Specialising in Shakespearean plays, the touring all-male troupe will perform the Bard’s masterpiece as it was meant to be performed – in full Elizabethan costume in the open air and with traditional music.

Whether you’re an expert of the Bard or brand new to his plays, The Tempest is a thrilling production – perfect for a summer evening.

Tickets start at just £5 to bring a picnic blanket, or £15 for those who would prefer to bring a low-backed garden chair to enjoy the play in greater comfort.

The show will go ahead in all but the very worst of conditions.
