ENJOY glorious Gershwin in technicolour.

Toe-tapping spectacular Crazy For You recreates the golden age of Broadway musicals in spellbinding fashion.

New Yorker Bobby Child reluctantly works in the family bank and is sent to small town Deadrock to foreclose on a failing theatre.

Stage-struck Bobby harbours a burning desire to appear on stage and switches sides to help put on a show to save the day. There’s a cunning impression of a Hungarian theatre impresario, which leads to all sorts of baffling amusement, lots of fun physical theatre and of course the classic boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, girl hates boy, girl eventually falls in love with boy storyline.

Tom Chambers heads the cast as the unwilling banker. He is charming, has all the moves and looks like he’s having the time of his life throughout this slightly over long two and a half hour show. Charlotte Wakefield as Polly, the daughter of the theatre owner, is full of fizz and pizzazz.

The storyline is utterly barmy, but gives rise to plenty of fun and the cast all seem to enjoy themselves immensely.

The hoofing while holding on to an instrument is particularly impressive, although complicated choreography does lead to the occasional mistake when a prop is dropped.

Crazy For You is corny but cheering.

It runs until Saturday. Tickets: 023 8071 1811 or mayflower.org.uk
