IT IS the community pub which aims to make clients feel part of one big family.

The Cleveland Bay in Valley Park, Chandler’s Ford, has been run by Jade and John Whitfield for the past eight years.

The couple based their success on focusing on providing clients with a cosy environment and friendly atmosphere.

Jade, 31, pub manager, said: “Clients have a nice family feel. We are a family and we get to know clients and people feel comfortable to come on their own especially mothers who want to go out with their babies. They just come here for a coffee and we make them feel comfortable.”

To build a stronger relationship with regulars, Jade tries to keep regular shifts so that customers can meet the friendly face they know every time they walk in.

“I think this is quite important and when regulars come here and don’t find the staff they know they ask,” she said.

The pub is owned by Wadworth and used to be a busy drinking pub but has now introduced more food on its menu to satisfy clients.

Homemade pie of the day is the best seller but the menu changes in winter and summer.

“In winter we do traditionally warming dishes like sausage and mash but in summer we do more salads,” Jade said.

The area features a garden outside with two play grounds for children, one for toddlers and one for older children.

Youngsters have also the opportunity to choose between a selection of toys and play while they are inside with their families.

The dish children like the most is the handmade macaroni cheese.

Throughout the year the pub also hosts several events and most of the time raises money for charities.

“I like being part of the community. I like putting on events and see that people enjoy it. We’ve got a young family too and communication with the community helps to make you feel part of something. Pubs are a big part of the community,” the mother-of-two said.

The pub is open 365 days a year and hosts regular events every week.

A social gathering group for single people over 50 is held every Monday at 8.30pm; a poker event takes place on Tuesdays at 7.30pm while on Saturdays morning people meet up at the pub to start a healthy walk and spend some time together while sipping a drink. A popular quiz night is held every Sunday at 8.30pm.
